Forum for Research into Ice Shelf Processes

The Forum for Research into Ice Shelf Processes (FRISP) aims to coordinate the community engaged in research on the glaciological, oceanic and atmospheric processes governing the behaviour of ice shelves that are key to the ice sheet contribution to sea level change.

The Forum for Research into Ice Shelf Processes (FRISP) was first developed by SCAR in 1983, with a specific geographical focus on the Filchner‐Ronne Ice Shelf.  It later broadened its scope to the whole of Antarctica and Greenland. In 2016, it was confirmed as an Expert Group under the SCAR Physical Sciences Group to focus on the glaciological, oceanic, and atmospheric processes governing the behavior of ice shelves that are key to the ice sheet contribution to sea level change.

FRISP has arranged annual workshops, most of them in Europe, since 1984. During the workshop in 2024, it was decided that FRISP should expand the activity and arrange one workshop in Europe, and one in the southern hemisphere (“FRISP” and “FRISP South”).

Upcoming workshops: (click on the link for more information)

FRISP: 16-18 June 2025: Arctic Centre, University of Lapland, Rovaniemi, Finland (Rupert Gladstone: rupertgladstone1972@gmail.com). Registration not open.

FRISP South: 7-10 July 2025  Moreton Bay Research Station, The University of Queensland – Dunwich Qld (Alena Malyarenko: alena.malyarenko@canterbury.ac.nz). Registration not open

FRISP: 16-18 June 2025 in Rovaniemi, Finland

FRISP 2025 will be held at the Arctic Centre in Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland, from 16th to 18th June 2025.

The workshop will be announced on Cryolist in February by Rupert Gladstone and further information about accommodation, venue, and a registration link will be provided then. This information will also be posted here.

If you require an invitation letter for a visa application, you can contact Rupert Gladstone at any time (RupertGladstone1972@gmail.com / rupert.gladstone@ulapland.fi).

Follow-up workshop on subglacial outflow across grounding lines

An informal two-day workshop on subglacial outflow across grounding lines will follow on immediately in the same venue, for those who would like to spend a full week in Lapland! The exact format and topic will be determined closer to the time, depending on who is interested, but could include impacts of outflow on cavity circulation, feedbacks to ice dynamics and the subglacial hydrologic system, and various aspects of modelling outflow. Expressions of interest will be sought in Rupert’s February email.

FRISP South: 7-10 July 2025, Australia

Registration: Registration will open in February

Time:

7-10 July 2025

Location:

Moreton Bay Research Station, The University of Queensland – Dunwich Qld. Accommodation will be available at the Research Station.

Preliminary schedule outline:

Monday 7 July : arrive, introductory dinner

Tuesday 8 July, Wednesday 9 July:  science talks + field trip

Thursday 10 July: Morning session Planning, discussions ; wrap up in the afternoon.

We’re looking forward to hosting a multidisciplinary event with a shared focus on the ice shelves.
