Forum for Research into Ice Shelf Processes

The Forum for Research into Ice Shelf Processes (FRISP) aims to coordinate the community engaged in research on the glaciological, oceanic and atmospheric processes governing the behaviour of ice shelves that are key to the ice sheet contribution to sea level change.

The Forum for Research into Ice Shelf Processes (FRISP) was first developed by SCAR in 1983, with a specific geographical focus on the Filchner‐Ronne Ice Shelf.  It later broadened its scope to the whole of Antarctica and Greenland. In 2016, it was confirmed as an Expert Group under the SCAR Physical Sciences Group to focus on the glaciological, oceanic, and atmospheric processes governing the behavior of ice shelves that are key to the ice sheet contribution to sea level change.

FRISP has arranged annual workshops, most of them in Europe, since 1984. During the workshop in 2024, it was decided that FRISP should expand the activity and arrange one workshop in Europe (FRISP NH), and one in the southern hemisphere (“FRISP SH”).

Accommodation and travel

I (Rupert) have been unable to secure a hotel allocation for the duration of the NH FRISP 2025 meeting, due to other events going on in Rovaniemi. I do apologise for this. However, there is plenty of availability across several hotels in a central location, i.e. easy walking distance to the conference venue, the Arctic Centre. These hotels are recommended (and booking.com shows plenty more hotels with availability):

Scandic Rovaniemi City

Santa’s Hotel Santa Claus

Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna

Hotel Aakenus (cheaper option)

My favourite way to arrive in Rovaniemi is on the overnight train from Helsinki.                                   More info:https://www.vr.fi/en

There is also a train from Stockholm to Haparanda near the Finnish border. I’ve not used this, and onward transport would then be needed.

Rovaniemi also has an airport: https://www.finavia.fi/en/airports/rovaniemi/

It is always easy to pick up a taxi from the airport.  There is also the airport bus which runs between the airport and a few of the main hotels in Rovaniemi centre: https://airportbus.fi/en/frontpage/

Program

The full program of presentations will be found in a google doc, after all abstracts have been processed:

Times are for Finland, Eastern European Timezone (EET).

Follow-up workshop on subglacial outflow across grounding lines

An informal two-day workshop on subglacial outflow across grounding lines will follow on immediately in the same venue, for those who would like to spend a full week in Lapland! The exact format and topic will be determined closer to the time, depending on who is interested, but could include impacts of outflow on cavity circulation, feedbacks to ice dynamics and the subglacial hydrologic system, and various aspects of modelling outflow. Contact Rupert Gladstone if you are interested in participating.

FRISP South: 7-10 July 2025, Australia

Science focus

FRISP Southern Hemisphere will embrace a holistic approach to science presentations (not necessarily limited between the grounding line and calving front!) and welcomes research across disciplines that influences ice shelf dynamics. This includes glaciology, atmospheric drivers, subglacial hydrology, ocean circulation with cavities, small-scale oceanographic processes, cross-shelf exchange, and the impacts of fast ice and sea ice. Both observational and modelling studies are welcome. We aim to foster collaboration across these interconnected research areas.

Registration & Payment

To register for FRISP SH 2025, please visit https://payments.uq.edu.au/frisp_sh. Payment and presentation title will be taken at time of registration. Fees are $450 for Professional and $300 for Student registration. This cost will include the conference attendance, accommodation for 3 nights (generally in a share room) and partial catering (breakfast, morning, afternoon tea, and lunches).

Timeline

Registration opens: 4th April 2025

Payment opens: 4th April 2025

Registration closes: 4th May 2025

Programme distributed: late May 2025

Virtual attendance

The workshop is primarily designed for in-person attendance, but will also have limited opportunities for virtual presentations for those unable to attend. If you’re interested, please email the organisers.

Preliminary schedule outline:

Mon 7 July: Arrive, introductory dinner

Tue 8 July: Science talks

Wed 9 July:  Science talks + field trip

Thu 10 July: Morning session Planning, discussions ; wrap up in the afternoon.

Accommodation

MBRS contains accommodation options (some single rooms, some double-share rooms, mostly bunk rooms), which we have booked for the length of the conference. This is included in the price of registration. As most rooms contain several beds, we are generally unable to guarantee single rooms. Attendees are welcome to look for other local accommodation options.

More information on Moreton Bay Research Station is here https://moreton-bay.research.uq.edu.au/plan-your-visit

Meals

Breakfast, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided at MBRS. There will be a conference dinner organised for one night, but other nights you must fend for yourselves. There are several restaurants/take-aways/pub in Dunwich, within walking distance. There is also a small supermarket and cooking facilities upstairs which you can use.

Minjerribah is close enough to the mainland that commuting is possible! Be aware that the last ferry leaves at 7:55 pm.

  • By train, bus, and passenger ferry
  • Take the Airtrain from the airport, change to Cleveland line, get off at Cleveland Station (1.5 hours)
  • Change to the free “Stradbroke Flyer bus” from Cleveland Station to the ferry pier (10 mins)
